Young Wins World Science Award For Removing Microplastics From Wate

This young man has made a breakthrough against one of the biggest threats on the planet.

Fionn Ferreira , originally from Ireland, has been the winner of the Google Science Fair 2019 , a prestigious global event involving students from 13 to 18 years old.
The 18-year-old won a $ 50,000 prize and was delivered to Google's headquarters in California.

Ferreira was one of the 24 finalists chosen from more than 100 regional participants. Thanks to his project examining a new method for the extraction of microplastics from water, he could be the winner of the contest.
In the water, fish and other animals can confuse the small pieces of plastic with food and from there, the plastic is integrated into the food chain including humans.
Ireland plans to introduce legislation that will prohibit the sale, manufacture, import and exportof products containing microplastics.

Fionn used a method that combines magnetite oil and powder and magnets to extract microplastics from water. In 1,000 tests he performed, the young man was able to eliminate more than 87% of microplastics.
Your project could form the basis for an effective way to extract microplastics from water , which are a big problem today. "The next step is to scale this on an industrial level," Ferreira said.
By supporting youth initiatives like Fionn, we could find effective solutions to many of our problems in the world . An applause for science!
